Back in 2019, Emmanuel presented to us a handful of lots that were traced back to communities living on specific hills near his washing stations. As this is quite unique for East African coffees, this initiative immediately sparked our interest and kickstarted our discussions on how we could expand and deepen this type of traceability.

As buyers, it’s always exciting to find more information about where coffee is coming from; but additionally, Emmanuel made it very clear that it was helpful to Baho and their producer network as well. By connecting more closely with producers this way, we’re able to ensure we continue to build with them into the future and this motivates these growers to work with Baho, and also inspires growers around them as they see a possibility not only for solid pay for their coffee cherries, but also for recognition and relationships not normally offered to smallholder growers.

The Cyeshero Hill group is one that we’ve been able to work with for two harvests now, beginning in 2020. One of the smaller groups, they are comprised of only five growers who have larger than average farms for the country - coming in around 1 hectare on average. This year, the group was slightly smaller than in year’s past, but it continues to be an area we are very interested to support as they are all producers with high quality coffee that have never been able to connect to a market that values them in such a way as to seek to trace their coffees back to them in particular.

As with all of Semilla’s projects, it continues to be our goal to always seek to connect with smallholders who lack access to a consistent market that pays them well, and that invests in them beyond coffee. With the help of Emmanuel and the Baho team, we’ve been able to see them receive a second payment for the coffee which allows for much needed resources during the off season from coffee harvest and Emmanuel has also invested in sanitation infrastructure as well as provided fertilizers and pesticides to the group at no cost.
